Putin says peace negotiations must be restarted, but based on common sense

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (24) that peace talks in Ukraine needed to be restarted, but that Russia would only speak to legitimate leaders in Kiev.

Russia pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky no longer has legitimacy after his term ended. Ukraine, under martial law, said it would not hold presidential elections this year due to the war.

Putin also warned that for talks to resume, they would have to be based on “common sense”, not ultimatums.

“Let them resume [as negociações],” he said, adding that talks must take into account “the realities on the ground [campo de batalha]” and the provisions agreed during a previous attempt to reach an agreement in the first weeks of the war.

Putin would be willing to ceasefire

Putin would agree to halt the war in Ukraine with a negotiated ceasefire that recognizes the current battle lines, Reuters reported on Friday (24), citing four Russian sources.

Still, it would be ready to fight if Kiev and the West do not respond.
