President Vladimir Putin urged Russia’s neighbors on Friday not to escalate tensions, nine days after Moscow sent its forces into Ukraine.
“There are no bad intentions towards our neighbors. And I would also advise them not to escalate the situation, not to introduce any restrictions. We have fulfilled all our obligations and will continue to fulfill them,” Putin said in televised remarks.
“We see no need here to aggravate or worsen our relations. And all our actions, if they arise, always arise exclusively in response to some hostile actions, actions against the Russian Federation.”
Putin was shown on TV participating online, from his residence outside Moscow, in a flag-raising ceremony for a ferry in northern Russia.
After the start of the war, Russia received several economic sanctions from neighboring countries. Putin said the Russians were prepared to withstand sanctions and that this would not stop their advance into Ukraine.
Invest in power plant
In the early hours of Friday morning, local time (around 21:00 on Thursday, the 3rd, Brasília time), Russian military forces took over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine. A fire has hit the plant. The fire started in a training building outside the main reactor complex, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
Soon after the occurrence was confirmed, there were fears that the bombing would cause a leak of radioactive material, which has not been reported so far. According to Ukrainian authorities, a training building outside the plant’s perimeter was hit.
The plant’s spokesman, Andrii Tuz, said that the plant did not suffer any critical damage, although only one power generation unit out of six is operating. He further stated that at least one power generating unit at the nuclear power plant was hit during the conflict. “A lot of technical equipment was hit,” the spokesperson explained to CNN.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said “essential” equipment at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant site was not affected by the fire, according to Ukrainian officials. According to the agency, “factory employees [estão] taking mitigating actions”.
The director of Zaporizhzhia told Ukraine 24 television that radiation safety had been established at the site.
