Putin sends new hypersonic cruise missiles into the Atlantic Ocean

A frigate equipped with new supersonics cruise missiles Zircon, which he said are unique in the world, was sent on Wednesday (4/1) by the Russian president Vladimir Putin.

In a video conference with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Igor Krokhmal, commander of the frigate, which bears the name “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov”, the Russian president said the ship carries Zircon hypersonic weapons.

This time the ship is equipped with the latest supersonic missile system “Zircon” which has nothing like it” said Putin, who has been embroiled in a standoff with the West over the his war in Ukraine.

“I would like to wish the crew of the ship success in their service for the good of the Motherland” he said according to the Athens News Agency.

Shoigu said the Gorshkov will sail in the Atlantic and Indian oceans and the Mediterranean.

“This ship, equipped with [πυραύλους] “Zircon” is capable of spotting and delivering powerful strikes against the enemy at sea and on land,” Shoigu said.

Shoigu said the hypersonic missiles, known as Tsirkon or Zircon, can overpower any missile defense system. The missiles fly at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of more than 1,000 kilometersShoigu said.

Russia, China and the United States have engaged in a supersonic arms race. Due to their speeds – more than five times the speed of sound – and maneuverability, such weapons are seen as a way to gain an advantage over any opponent.

The target of a hypersonic weapon is much more difficult to estimate than for intercontinental ballistic missiles.
