Putin shattered peace in Europe, says European Parliament president

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met this Tuesday (22) to discuss the situation in Europe with the conflict in Ukraine. In a press conference after the meeting, Metsola said that “Putin has shattered the peace in Europe”.

“The war in Ukraine, or rather the unjustified invasion of Russia, changed everything. Putin shattered the peace in Europe. Something we thought was unimaginable just a few weeks ago,” he said.

Both leaders stressed the need to act together and “do more”.

“We have to be able to get through this together. The government’s position on this issue [parar todo o fornecimento de gás russo para a Alemanha] remains unchanged. And that goes for many other member states as well, which are even more dependent on coal, gas and oil imports than Germany,” said Olaf Scholz.

“We decided, however, to end our dependence on Russian imports of coal, gas and oil as soon as possible and we are working on this with the greatest intensity and speed”, he added, adding that if the diversification of energy resources is achieved quickly, the ban on the import of Russian energy will happen automatically”.

Roberta Metsola shared the German chancellor’s view, noting that it is not just about a “green agenda” but also about national security issues.

“Russia Failed” and Leaders Meeting This Week

At a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, White House Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Russia had failed in all three of its goals in starting the Ukraine war.

“Russia has three goals with this attack on Ukraine: to subjugate Ukraine, increase Russia’s prestige and divide the West. Russia has failed in all three objectives. In fact, she has achieved the opposite so far,” Sullivan said.

The adviser also commented on US President Joe Biden’s trip to Europe this week, noting that he will participate in an emergency summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in Brussels, and, later, in a European Council session.

He did not elaborate, but said Biden would discuss new sanctions with allies, as well as tightening existing ones, and ways to reduce European countries’ energy dependence on Russia.

In addition, one of the focus of the ads will be against countries that help Russia to weaken the effect of sanctions.
