Putin signs decree for hostile countries to pay gas in rubles from the 1st

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that under a newly signed decree on trading natural gas with “hostile countries”, companies will need to have accounts with Russian banks and pay contracts in rubles.

“Today, I signed a decree laying down the rules for trading Russian natural gas with so-called hostile states. We suggest that counterparties in these countries adopt a very simple and transparent scheme to buy Russian gas: open ruble accounts with Russian banks, and payments must come from these accounts,” Putin said.

The new rules go into effect this Friday, April 1.

“If these payments are not made, we will consider this as a default on the part of the buyers and this will have consequences. Nobody gives us anything for free and we are not going to be charitable,” Putin said, adding that active contracts will be suspended in case of non-payment.
