Russian President Vladimir Putin today spoke of progress in negotiations on the export of grain from Ukraine via the Black Sea and thanked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his “mediation” on the matter, during a meeting in Tehran.
“I would like to thank you for your mediation efforts, because you proposed Turkey as a negotiating ground regarding the problems of food production, the problems of grain exports through the Black Sea,” Putin said, according to statements cited in a Kremlin statement. .
“Thanks to your mediation, we have made progress. All the issues are not settled yet, that’s true, but there is movement and that’s good,” he added.
The two leaders are in Tehran for talks with their Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raishi, about the conflict in Syria and the war in Ukraine.
Putin and Erdogan are expected to discuss mechanisms to allow exports through safe sea lanes of grain from Ukraine that has been blocked by Russia’s military operation in that country, risking a global food crisis.
The Russian Defense Ministry had announced on Friday that a “final text” would be ready soon to allow the export of grain from Ukraine.
During his meeting with Erdogan today, Putin also referred to the “many issues” surrounding the settlement of the conflict in Syria, as well as “the other important issue” of the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
“We have a very busy agenda, and I’m glad to see you,” Putin added to the Turkish president.
