Putin throws nuclear submarine with missiles that exceed sound speed

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched on Thursday (27) a nuclear-powered submarine, equipped with hypersonic zircon missiles capable of traveling several times the speed of sound.

Russian news agencies said Putin launched the vessel, called Perm in honor of a city in the Ural, with the order: “I authorize!”

The Russian agencies, citing release documents, said perm is the first nuclear -powered submarine to be equipped with zircon missiles as a standard feature.

Zircon missiles have a range of 900 km and their speed makes them very difficult to defend themselves.

Perma is the sixth submarine in the Yasen and Yasen-M classes of Russia built by Savmash Naval Shipyard, near Murmansk.

Russian agency reports said the vessel building specifications slightly differentiated from previous models of the same class.

The agencies said that while in Murmansk, Putin visited a submarine named Arkhangelsk, also of the same class, and visited the company Atomflot, which oversees Russia’s waterbreak projects.
