French President Emmanuel Macron called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin announced today, according to Russian news agency Ria Novosti.
“At the initiative of the French side, Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron,” the relevant announcement states.
According to the report, Putin spoke to Macron about barriers to Russian exports, saying “barriers to exports do not contribute to food security.”
The Russian president, according to the statement, confirmed Russia’s readiness to provide the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency with the necessary assistance when they visit the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.
“The Russian side has confirmed its readiness to provide the Agency’s inspectors with the necessary assistance,” the statement says.
The two presidents referred to the importance of sending the organization’s mission to Zaporizhia as soon as possible to assess the real situation in the region. “The presidents noted the importance of an agency mission to the nuclear plant as soon as possible, which will be able to assess the actual situation on the ground,” the statement said.
Putin also argued that the shelling of Zaporizhia by Ukrainian forces poses a risk of disaster. “Various aspects of the situation around Ukraine were discussed. Vladimir Putin, in particular, emphasized that the systematic shelling by the Ukrainian army on the territory of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant creates the risk of a large-scale disaster that could lead to radioactive contamination of huge territories”.
The French president told his Russian counterpart he was concerned about security risks at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the Elysee said, adding that Putin had agreed to send a mission of International Atomic Energy Agency experts to the region.
“Vladimir Putin also recalled the invitation of UN experts and the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit the detention center in Yelenovka, where a large number of Ukrainian prisoners of war held there were killed as a result of a missile attack by the Ukrainian armed forces,” he argues also the Kremlin announcement.
Putin also informed Macron about the implementation of the agreement on Ukrainian grain signed in Istanbul on July 22. “The Russian president informed about the implementation of the agreement signed in Istanbul on July 22 on the export of Ukrainian grain from Black Sea ports and the export of Russian food and fertilizers to world markets,” the statement said.
The two presidents agreed to continue their talks in the coming days, according to the briefing from the French presidency.
