Putin to Orban: ‘I hope Moscow-Budapest partnership strengthens’

Russian President Vladimir Putin today congratulated Hungarian leader Viktor Orban on his victory in the parliamentary elections, the Kremlin said, expressing hope for a strengthening of ties between Moscow and Budapest.

“The Russian head of state expressed confidence that, despite the difficult international situation, the future development of bilateral ties and the partnership (between Moscow and Budapest) will be in the interests of the peoples of Russia and Hungary,” the statement said. of the Russian presidency.

Putin and Orban have long maintained friendly relations, despite numerous crises between Moscow, on the one hand, and the European Union, on the one hand, and NATO, on the other, two organizations of which Hungary is a member.

Hungary, for example, was the first country in Europe to use the Russian vaccine against Covid-19, Sputnik V, although it has not been recognized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Also after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Orban refused to hand over weapons to Ukraine and to consider sanctions that would deprive the Hungarians of Russian oil and gas.
