The Belgrade-Moscow “strategic alliance” was hailed by Vladimir Putin following the victory of Serb Aleksandar Vucic in Serbia’s presidential election.
“I believe that our actions as Heads of State will continue to favor the strengthening of the strategic partnership between our countries. .
In Putin’s view, this decisive victory reflects broad Serb support for Vuτςi πολιτική’s policy aimed at “resolving current socio-economic problems and pursuing an independent foreign policy”.
Since the Russian invasion of Russia, the Vuτςiτς’s government, accustomed to taking advantage of rivalries between the West and Russia, has taken an ambivalent stance, formally condemning Moscow to the UN and refraining from any sanctions against the Kremlin.
In Serbia, traditionally adjacent to Moscow, many Serbs support the Kremlin and have spoken out in favor of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
