Putin urges Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to scale back

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with the leaders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan after clashes on the border of the Central Asian republics.

“Vladimir Putin urged the sides to avoid further escalation and to take steps to resolve the situation exclusively by peaceful, political and diplomatic means as soon as possible, and confirmed Russia’s readiness to provide the necessary assistance to ensure stability in the border region. Kyrgyzstan-Tajik,” the Kremlin reported on Sunday (18).

The former Soviet republics clashed over a border dispute on 14 and 16 September, accusing each other of using tanks, mortars, rocket artillery and assault drones to attack nearby outposts and settlements, leaving at least least 54 dead.

Central Asia’s border issues stem largely from the Soviet era, when Moscow tried to divide the region into groups whose people were often located among those of other ethnicities.

Kyrgyzstan said about 137,000 had left the conflict area. already the Tajikistan did not provide any official casualty figures, but security sources said 30 people were killed this week.

The two sides agreed to a ceasefire on 16 September, which largely held despite several alleged incidents of bombing.
