Putin will escalate the conflict to the last resort, says former Brazilian ambassador

In the “foreseeable future”, Russia and Ukraine are unlikely to reach a diplomatic understanding that results in a broad ceasefire on Ukrainian territory. This is the opinion of the diplomat and former Brazilian ambassador to Washington and Beijing, Roberto Abdenur, who in an interview with CNN this Tuesday (22) analyzed the conflict in Eastern Europe.

According to the diplomat, Russian President Vladimir Putin “will escalate the conflict to the last resort” when he can “in some way present his population with a minimally satisfactory result”.

Abdenur considered that the demands that Russia presented to end the invasion of Ukraine are “maximalist”, and considered that the Ukrainians should not accept them. The former ambassador said that “European countries themselves would not welcome” Ukraine’s acceptance of the Kremlin’s conditions.

On the other hand, the diplomat said that the president of the United States, Joe Biden, “has a tendency to talk too much, to use very aggressive expressions without thinking about the consequences of this, such as, for example, calling Putin a war criminal”.

“Vladimir Putin is a war criminal, but for the US President to issue such an opinion is inconvenient and counterproductive. Biden is, at the moment, enjoying the first occasion where he has partisan support, where Republicans support the tough stance against the invasion of Ukraine,” he said.

According to Abdenur, the war in Ukraine “affects us directly”. “It is not a local conflict, any conflict in the heart of Europe is something of global reach, it is a conflict of global repercussion and not just local”, he considered.

The diplomat also commented on the meeting that Biden will have with the NATO summit, and pointed out that the military alliance must “create conditions for a new architecture of security and stability in Europe and, consequently, for the whole world”.

“NATO should not be seen as a mortal enemy of Russia, nor should Russia be seen as an enemy of the West,” said the diplomat.
