Putin’s daughters in the spotlight: Britain imposes sanctions on them

Britain added his daughters today Vladimir Putin in its sanctions list, following the US move, in an attempt, as he described it, to target the lifestyles of those in the Russian president’s inner circle.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Britain and other Western allies announced sanctions against Moscow’s wealthy elite, the country’s key industries, and its access to the international financial system.

According to the update of the British list of sanctions announced today, the assets are “frozen” of Putin’s adult daughters Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova, as well as Sergeevna Vinokurova, daughter of Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. All three were sanctioned by the United States earlier this week.

“Our unprecedented sanctions package is hurting the elite and their families, and it is downgrading the Russian economy to a level never seen before since the collapse of the Soviet Union,” Foreign Minister Liz Tras said in a statement.

Britain also said its analysis showed that Russia was heading for its deepest recession since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Britain estimates that 60% of Russia’s foreign exchange reserves have been “frozen” as a result of international sanctions, as broadcast by international agencies and the Athens News Agency.

Yesterday, the Kremlin, which claims its actions are a “special military operation” to disarm and “de-Nazify” Ukraine, said the move against Putin’s daughters was part of a wider Western frenzy against Russia.
