Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitiev, is visiting Washington this week and said on Thursday that unidentified forces were trying to generate tension between Russia and the United States.
“Today, numerous forces interested in maintaining tension prevent the restoration of constructive cooperation … These forces are deliberately distorting Russia’s position, trying to interrupt any steps toward dialogue, sparing money or resources for it,” Dmitiev said on Telegram.
“The opponents of rapprochement fear that Russia and the United States find a point in common, begin to better understand and build cooperation in both international and economy matters,” he added.
Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump’s actions to restore ties between countries generated fears in Ukraine and European allies that the two leaders could close an agreement to end the war in a way that would endanger the region.
Dmitiev said Putin sent him to Washington this week to meet members of the US government.
“Yes, restoring dialogue is a difficult and gradual process. But each meeting, each frank conversation allows us to move on,” Dmitiev posted on Telegram.
“A real understanding of the Russian position opens new opportunities for constructive cooperation, including the economic and investment sphere,” he added.
The Republican, who says he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker, repeatedly spoke that he wants the three -year war in Ukraine to Ahab and warned of its risks to become a third world war between the United States and Russia.
Steve Witkoff, a Trump envoy who took the lead in government contacts with Kremlin, invited Dmitiev to the United States last week, US officials said.
The White House instructed the State Department to issue a short -term license for Dmitiev to travel to the country, a necessary stage, as Putin’s envoy faces sanctions from the US, authorities reported.
