Putin’s ‘fire’ against the West for escalating tensions in Europe

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday blamed the West for escalating tensions in Europe, saying he had misjudged the outcome of the Cold War.

Speaking to senior military officials, Putin characteristically said that Russia would respond “adequately” to any Western aggression and further develop its military.

Russia has amassed tens of thousands of troops along its border with Ukraine, urging NATO to refuse to accept the former Soviet republic as a member and to guarantee that no weapons or troops will be deployed in the neighboring country.

Speaking at the same meeting, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the United States has deployed about 8,000 troops near the Russian border and, along with NATO allies, frequently flies bombers near Russia.

NATO efforts to involve the Ukrainian army in the Alliance’s activities pose a security threat, Shoigu said.

Earlier on Tuesday, a senior Russian diplomat said that contacts had already begun between Moscow and Washington on the issue of security guarantees sought by Russia and that there was a possibility that the two sides would reach an agreement.
