Leaders of the G7, a group of major Western industrial economies, did not discuss Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposals for peace in Ukraine because everyone knew they were not serious, said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Speaking from Italy shortly before leaving for Switzerland, where a conference on Ukraine will open on Saturday, Scholz said Putin’s proposals – for Ukraine to give up four provinces that Russia claims, stop fighting and abandon their ambition to be a member of NATO – they only aimed to divert attention from the conference.
The heads of state of the G7 countries and the leaders of the European Union are in Puglia, Italy, where in recent days they discussed urgent issues on the international agenda, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, climate change and the war in the Gaza Strip.
