Qatar hopes to extend the truce between Israel and Hamas beyond the four days initially agreed, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari told CNN on Saturday (26).
“What we hope is that the timing of the releases of these two days and this four-day agreement will allow us to extend the truce beyond these four days and therefore enter into more serious discussions about the rest of the hostages,” Al-Ansari said.
The spokesperson stressed that he continues to work with senior officials in Qatar to address the points on both sides of the conflict regarding the implementation of the hostage agreement.
“Within this type of mediation, we will always find both sides saying that the other side did not comply with the agreement”, he pondered.
Al-Ansari added that he could not confirm whether any Americans would be released on the third day of the truce.
“The lists are delivered daily. We now wait for the list for the third day. Unfortunately, we cannot know in advance who will be on that list”, he highlighted.
The ministry spokesperson also said that Qatar is working with partners in Egypt, the United States and both sides of the conflict to ensure that the agreed number of humanitarian aid trucks are authorized to enter Gaza.
“There are many sensitive points when it comes to humanitarian aid that we need to work on”, he commented.
Al-Ansari responded to the head of the Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Former Prisoners Affairs, who accused Israel of not fulfilling the agreement to release prisoners in order of length of service.
“We are now hopeful that, on the third day of this break, we will be able to clarify all the details that made this day so difficult,” he said.
A second group of hostages released from Gaza – made up of 13 Israelis and four Thai citizens – arrived in Israel on Saturday night (25).
