Qatar: Influential Qaradaw preacher who supported Arab Spring uprisings dies

The Muslim preacher Sheikh Yusef al-Qaradawi passed away in the Catarrh at the age of 96 and was considered a person of great influence, having also supported the Arab Spring uprisings.

According to Reuters, Qaradawi was considered one of the spiritual leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. In fact, he was born in Egypt in 1926, spent much of his life in Qatar, where he became one of the most recognizable and influential Sunni clerics in the Arab world thanks to his regular appearances on Qatar’s Al Jazeera network.

“His Eminence Imam Yusuf al-Qaradawi who gave his life explaining the principles of Islam and supporting his umma (Muslim community) has passed on to the mercy of God,” said a statement on Twitter announcing his death, in an allusion to for his struggle against the health problems he was facing.

Qaradawi’s sermons offered a counterweight to the radical ideologies espoused by al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, while he supported armed movements elsewhere in the region. He was highly critical of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as well as the Saudi leadership, causing a rift with Doha.

An Egyptian court sentenced him to death in absentia in 2015 along with other Muslim Brotherhood leaders. His daughter was arrested by Egyptian authorities on terrorism charges in 2017 and until 2021, while his son-in-law remains in custody, their lawyer said. Both deny the charges.

Paying tribute, Tunisian Islamist leader Rashed Ghannouchi described Qaradawi as a man “committed to the principle of moderation within this great religion”.
