The need for greater transparency in the institutions of the European Union and the accusations of corruption by the Catarrh the MEPs discussed on Tuesday (13/12). The debate was opened by the Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Ylva Johanssonwhich emphasized that there should be zero tolerance for corruption.
Ms. Johansson called the allegations that have come to light extremely serious while she praised the work of the Belgian prosecutors, the police authorities.
To the recipients of the money, he said:Same on you. Shame on you for betraying our trust. The trust of the citizens of Europe who expect you to fight for their interests. That you betrayed the trust of your colleagues who work very hard and honestly.”
Mrs. Johansson announced that the Commission will propose in 2023 new legislation that will criminalise all forms corruption in all Member States, not only bribery, but also illicit enrichment, embezzlement and abuse of power, with harsh penalties.
MEPs are asking full internal investigation, cooperation with the Belgian Authorities and additional measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Better transparency rules, registration of third countries in the EU pressure register, strict enforcement of ethics rules and the establishment of an independent EU ethics body, as well as a separate inquiry committee, were some of the proposals mentioned during the debate.
