Qualcomm introduced Oryon, a line of processors for Windows PCs. Reply to Apple Silicon

Rumors around Qualcomm’s desire to release its own ARM-based desktop processors have been around for quite some time, and today, November 17, the company decided to officially confirm them. The chipmaker has unveiled a new processor sub-brand called Oryon, which will make processors for Windows-based computers as well as smartphones and other devices. But, apparently, the manufacturer is focusing on the PC market, since the first processor from the new brand will be presented in early 2023 as part of a computer – most likely, we are talking about a laptop. Unfortunately, the company decided not to reveal the details of the new product.

It is worth recalling that Qualcomm has previously released ARM-based processors under the Snapdragon brand for computers running Windows and Chrome OS operating systems. True, the gadgets turned out to be rather weak, they could hardly cope even with basic tasks and were not particularly popular, remaining an extremely niche market product. Now, Qualcomm has probably solved the problem of low performance – if the manufacturer launches a whole new brand for new chips, then, probably, the engineers were able to implement something similar to the line of Apple chips, which are now literally tearing apart analogues on Intel processors in all tasks.

True, the problem of Qualcomm’s ARM laptops at the moment is not only the relatively weak Snapdragon chip. In fact, the main difficulties in using these solutions lie in Windows itself on ARM, which surprises with a huge number of problems when launching various applications created and optimized for “regular” Windows. And if Apple was able to literally force software developers to optimize their software for the M1 processor due to the huge market, then whether the market for laptops on new chips will be so impressive that large companies rework their software is a big question.

So although Qualcomm advertises the new platform in its press release as a chip with a “new level of performance”, in fact, a lot depends on Microsoft and its desire to flood the market with laptops and stationary PCs based on ARM. If the developer of the Windows operating system and major software publishers are not interested in this platform, then no amount of power will help.
