Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and 4 Gen 1: advanced chips for entry-level and mid-range

On September 6, American chipmaker Qualcomm announced two new mobile chipsets. These are Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 for entry-level devices and Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 for mid-range smartphones. The first is built on a 6-nanometer process, but the second is on a more modern 4-nanometer node. The first devices based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 platform will appear on the market this quarter, but smartphones with Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 will have to wait until the first quarter of 2023.

Qualcomm did not disclose the full characteristics of the new chips. So far, it is only known that both platforms have an eight-core central processor. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 has core cores clocked at 2.2GHz, while the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 has a core core clock speed capped at 2GHz. The manufacturer also kept silent about which Adreno graphics accelerators are used in the new chips.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 is equipped with the 7th generation Qualcomm AI Engine and the 4th generation Snapdragon X62 5G modem. It supports Wi-Fi 6E and 200MP cameras with HDR video recording.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 also has an AI Engine software solution, though not the latest version. The chip supports Full HD+ resolution screens with refresh rates up to 120Hz and cameras up to 108 megapixels. There’s also a Snapdragon X51 5G modem, but no Wi-Fi 6E.

Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 delivers a 35 percent boost in graphics performance and a 40 percent boost in CPU power. But Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 turned out to be 15% more powerful in terms of CPU and 10% faster in terms of graphics processing. True, the manufacturer does not specify which processors are being compared. In the case of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1, it is most likely compared to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480/480+ as the company no longer has other chipsets in the series.
