Qualcomm threatens to beat M2 processor with help from ex-Apple engineers

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said that his company will surpass Apple in the development of a processor for portable computers. In this he will be helped by three former engineers of the Cupertino giant who took part in the creation of the Apple Silicon single-chip system. It is noteworthy that Qualcomm (as well as Intel) bosses made similar statements regarding the Apple M1, which was introduced in 2020.

When it became clear how revolutionary the Apple M1 chip was in terms of performance and energy efficiency, Qualcomm and Intel scaled down their ambitions. It became obvious that Apple had created something very serious, and none of the companies expected such a significant success.

By coincidence, a team of engineers who previously worked on Apple’s processor are now working at Qualcomm. Three former company executives left Apple in 2019 to create a new chip startup, Nuvia, to compete with Intel and AMD. Apple, in turn, believed that they were trying to force it to acquire a startup, in fact, buying out their own technologies. Earlier this year, Qualcomm unexpectedly bought Nuvia for $1.4 billion, taking advantage of Apple’s M1 chip design expertise.

The head of Qualcomm also said that he was not worried about the loss of Apple’s modem business, the company is still showing strong growth.
