Qualcomm’s mobile SoCs have gotten a bit confusing in recent years. Yes, there is the Snapdragon 800 series for flagships, and the Snapdragon 200 and 400 for budget devices. But there are many more models, plus versions have appeared, and it has become more difficult to understand all this. In this regard, Qualcomm has announced plans to simplify the names of mobile chips in the future.
First of all, Qualcomm’s SoCs will no longer bear the manufacturer’s name. The company intends to spin off Snapdragon as a separate brand with Qualcomm only in exceptional cases. The new simplified naming scheme means that there will be no more three-digit numbers in the names of the chipsets. Instead, each mobile platform will receive one number indicating which category it belongs to, and another number indicating the generation of the chip.
Qualcomm also plans to use different colors for the logo so that you can see at a glance which class the chipset belongs to. Gold will be used for flagship mobile platforms. Midnight, Gunmetal, Nickel and Red are for other categories. The Snapdragon logo will also change, making it simpler, clearer and more modern. Since all the chipsets in Qualcomm’s arsenal already support 5G, the company plans to abandon this prefix in the names.
Considering all of the above, the company’s next flagship chipset may be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. More details on the upcoming Qualcomm chipset lineup will be revealed at the Snapdragon Tech Summit, which will be held from November 30 to December 1, 2021.
