Qualcomm’s new aptX Lossless audio codec delivers CD-quality audio over Bluetooth

Today, several major streaming services (Tidal, Apple Music, Spotify, etc.) provide the user with the opportunity to listen to music in high quality. However, for audiophiles who want this quality, an additional DAC is still needed, since Bluetooth headphones transmit sound with loss, which means that the whole point in Hi-Res content is lost. Fortunately, this problem will be fixed very soon, as Qualcomm has created a new codec, which, according to the company’s engineers, provides audio transmission over Bluetooth in CD-quality (16-bit, 44.1 kHz).

The new codec was called Qualcomm aptX Lossless, and for its implementation, the developers from Qualcomm had to modify their own Bluetooth High Speed ​​Link technology in order to provide the necessary bandwidth to transfer content in high quality. Moreover, this codec can compress the signal up to 24-bit 96 kHz to ensure uninterrupted data transmission in certain situations – the user himself can choose the mode of operation he needs, but by default a higher audio quality will be used. However, there is also bad news for those who are already waiting for the release of this codec to the masses.

The fact is that the Qualcomm aptX Lossless codec will be integrated into the Snapdragon Sound technology, which the company announced back in March 2021. Accordingly, all wireless headphones that will receive support for Snapdragon Sound will work with the new codec without losing sound quality. True, this also means that even if the signal source (smartphone, tablet, computer) supports the aptX codec, to get the latest aptX Lossless, the user will need to purchase new wireless headphones – the first models that will receive support for Snapdragon Sound and this codec will appear only in 2022 year.
