Quality of life: Bologna wins, ahead of Bolzano and Florence

They are on the podium Bologna, Bolzano and Florence. These are the provinces with the best quality of life according to the annual survey by Sole24ore. The capital of Emilia triumphs for the fifth time in 22 years. Last in the standings is Crotone. This report, which photographs the level of well-being in the territories based on 90 indicators, 40 of which updated to 2022, shows for all the provinces the signs of the economic recession, the consequences of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the weight of inflation and expensive energy. The gap between the South and the rest of the country is widening for all macro areas: wealth and consumption; business and work; environment and services; demography, society and health; justice and security; culture and leisure.

After Bologna, which was in the lead in 2000, 2004, 2011 and 2020, it triumphed for «Demography, health and society», thanks to the parameters that measure the education levelsthere are Bolzano, which is often in the top ten, and Florence, third with a climb of eight positions compared to 2021. Only in 2003 was the Tuscan capital in the lead.

There are three regions that perform well overall. The Trentino Alto Adige, in addition to Bolzano second, places the province of Trento in fifth place. They follow Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. Among the top ten there is Parma ninth, then Reggio Emilia 13th. Siena is fourth, Pisa tenth. The Tuscan provinces win for “Culture and leisure” and for “Environment and services”.

In Lombardy Cremona, Bergamo, Sondrio and Lodi improve, Como, Mantua and Monza worsen and Brianza, however, is the best for the quality of life of women. Worse still are the largest metropolitan cities in general. Milan it is eighth in the general classification, it wins for «Business and work», but it is economically inaccessible. Rome is 31st with 18 positions less than last year. Genoa is 27th, Turin 40th. The cities of the South are much lower down: position 88 for Palermo, 98 for Naples. In general, it is the smaller provinces that triumph in the individual categories. For «Wealth and consumption» Belluno wins, Oristano is first for «Justice and security».

The South keep staying at the bottom of the rankings. Crotone is last for the third consecutive year: at the bottom of “Wealth and consumption” and “Culture and leisure”. Positions from 81 to 107 are all occupied by provinces of the South.
