Quality of life, the ranking by age: for the little ones Aosta wins, Naples the worst

Children, young and old. Where do they live best in Italy? Respectively Aosta, Piacenza and Cagliari. These are the three provinces that this year lead the ranking of the Quality of Life by age group of Sole24ore to the second edition. It is based on 12 parameters, provided by certified sources such as Istat, Miur, Centro Studi Tagliacarne, Iqvia. The presentation at the Trento Festival of Economics.

In first place for the children there is the province of Aosta, which is sixth for the elderly and 37th for young people. Piacenza is in the lead for the young, 42nd for the elderly and 75th for the little ones. Cagliari is the first for elderly people20th for children and 80th for young people.

The only province that is in all three of the top ten is Trento. Parma, on the other hand, is always among the top 15. For the two lowest age groups, children and young people, the regions with the best performances are Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. The first has Arezzo, Siena and Florence in second, third and fourth place. The second has Piacenza, Ferrara and Ravenna on the podium, Forlì-Cesena and Modena are in eighth and tenth position. The schools in the North West are the most accessible, those in the entire North are the most crowded. Gorizia is first for equipped green areas, Trieste for places in nursery schools.

The parameters vary for the age groups. For the little ones there is the percentage of school buildings with canteens, for the young the companies that do e-commerce among those for the young, the presence of medical specialists for the elderly. Each parameter was assigned a score for each province from 1000 to 0.

The Center North is a winner for the youngest. The sore points are the big cities and the South which fails to respond to the needs of families with children even if it is the most prolific territory. There are factors in which some southern provinces work: marriages, average age at birth of the first child, low rents and youth entrepreneurship projects. Caserta is sixth and in the top ten there are Salerno, Agrigento and Vibo Valentia. For the elderly there is the excellent result of some Sardinian provinces, but in second and third place is the whole of Trentino Alto Adige.

Almost all large cities have negative results. For children Milan is 60th, Rome is 83rd. Rome is third from last for young people and Milan 95th, Venice occupies the 102nd position. From the general classification for young people, the first metropolitan area in the ranking is Bologna, 32nd. Only for the elderly Rome and Milan are in the top ten. Compared to last year, strongly influenced by the pandemic, the data on the life expectancy index of the elderly in the Lombardy provinces improved.
