Quarantine, how it could change for the asymptomatic (to save essential services)

We are at one million: many Italians are in quarantine, those ended up in home isolation after a swab at the pharmacy, the “official” positives (even if the infected, in total, according to estimates, are at least double). In this fifth wave of Covid, the growth of the contagion curve is exponential, and increases by 50% every week: in two weeks, from 310 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, it increased to 504, reaching 763 in the latest report published by the ISS. The peak is expected between mid and late July. The RT hit 1.30.

In a similar scenario, there is a very concrete risk: that of staff shortage of essential services, such as transport, hospitals and security (in Health, in June, the positive operators who remained at home in quarantine were almost 20,000). Also because, at the numerous quarantines, in this period the holidays are also added up. A possible solution, in order not to put services at risk, could be that of abolish or mitigate quarantine for those who are positive but asymptomaticas also assumed within the Government.

In short, the obligation of isolation could be discussed again at least for those who are asymptomatic and work in essential services. Or they could be predicted mini quarantines: in the United States, for example, positives but asymptomatic can leave the house after 5 days and do not have the obligation to swab.

Undersecretary for Health Andrea Costa is convinced that this is the most suitable solution: «I’ve always said that the goal is to get to live with the virus and living together means, in my opinion, also taking into consideration the hypothesis that those who are positive and asymptomatic can avoid isolation and quarantine “, he explained to Rai News 24. “I think keeping quarantine is too much of a restriction. Perhaps putting on a simple mask you can go to work and thus prevent you from ending up in a lockdown without realizing it. ”
