It was April 9, 2005. Charles and Camilla, the protagonists of the most controversial love story at the turn of the millennium, finally managed to realize their dream by making that union desired at all costs official. For obvious reasons, it was not the classic royal wedding in which the bride shows off a tiara, a long veil rich in history and a precious dress but a rather streamlined ceremony divided into two parts, a civil rite before the Windsor Guildhall and of a blessing then in chapel of San Giorgio to the castle.

Godfrey of CrollalanzaIt wasn't easy for the two lovers to get to their wedding day. There were controversies related to the fact that the two were both divorced, the husband of Camilla furthermore he was still alive, but also because Charles, once he ascended the throne, would also become head of the Church of England. The wedding date was originally set for April 8, but an unexpected event occurred: the death of Pope John Paul II. Prince Charles was sent to the Vatican for the solemn funeral on behalf of Queen Elizabeth and the wedding was postponed for 24 hours.

Given the personality of the spouses but above all given the conditions, those foreseen and those imponderable, the dress chosen by the one who is now known as Queen Camilla could only be elegant and essential at the same time. Only 28 guests were expected to be present at the civil ceremony and among these, due to a formality due to the path that had brought the couple to that moment, there were not the sovereign and the Prince Philip.

If the second is what immediately comes to mind when we think about the event, not only for the royal aspect and for the fascinator feathered but also because it is the one that appears in the official shots in which Elizabeth II is also present, the first is the one that remained most in the background. And to say that he is the one who embodied a small real revolution.

The sovereign consort of Charles III not only passed the test of style, but demonstrated that she had taste and restraint. Her looks have always been elegant and appropriate: and to say that the tabloids once tormented her with the accusation of being “sloppy”

The civil marriage with the future British monarch consigned the current Queen Camilla to history but on 5 June 2007 the then Duchess of Cornwall made costume history. Here she is in Cardiff at the Welsh national assembly with the same wedding outfit but with a different hat also made by Philip Treacy and a pearl necklace to embellish the neckline. In both circumstances, Camilla pinned on the lapel the pin with the feathers of the coat of arms of the Prince of Walesa jewel that labeled her as Princess of Wales only symbolically, given that the title comes from Princess Diana to Kate Middleton.

The operation rewear however, it could also have been studied on the drawing board and therefore be something more substantial than a look brought out after a couple of years to keep it from gathering dust in the wardrobe. Wales has always been one of the places close to Charles' heart and bringing that highly valuable dress to that important place, also from a political point of view, could be interpreted as a sign of great respect.
The newspapers talked about breach of protocol but behind the choice to “recycle” that specific look it is perhaps better to think of a tribute seasoned with a pinch of strategy. Even with the choice of clothes you can enter people's hearts.
