The Queen Mother, named after premature death of her husband (King George VI) to avoid confusion with the daughter (his namesake)has long been one of the members most popular and loved of the Windsor house. Noted for his role as moral support to the people during World War II, he continued even as a widow – after a short retreat in Scotland – to play the classics institutional tasks.
Royal tours, public speaking and charities, state obligations from which he was able to free himself almost only in Augustwhen he took refuge in the Castle of Mey. Meanwhile he developed a great interest for horse racing, a passion he has shared for a long time with his daughter. In the summer of 2000, his 100th birthday it was celebrated with a grandiose parade and reception at the Guidhall.

He died on March 30, 2002, after being fractured the basin and injured his arm from two falls, and emotionally distraught since the disappearance of the Princess Margaret, his second daughter.
