THE queen elizabeth II gives Great Britain marked the eve of its Platinum Jubilee with a special reception at Sandringham House this Saturday (5th).
On Sunday, the 95-year-old monarch will become the first in UK history to celebrate 70 years on the throne. The day before reaching the historic landmark, the Queen welcomed members of the local community and groups of volunteers to her private home in Norfolk, about 100 miles north of London.
At the event, she spoke with former culinary student Angela Wood, who helped develop a recipe inextricably linked to the beginning of her reign – called Coronation Chicken.
The dish of cold chicken with cream sauce and curry with rice salad, peas and herbs mixed in was invented to serve foreign dignitaries at the coronation feast.
Other guests at the monarch’s home included members of the local Women’s Institute, of which she has been president since 2003, as well as pensioners from the Sandringham Estate and their families, and representatives from local charities, Little Discoverers and West Norfolk Befriending.
The queen, in a blue crepe dress with white brocades by Angela Kelly, appeared to be in good spirits during the event, according to British news agency PA Media. She held a wooden cane and carried her trademark black bag as she happily made her way through the guests.
After greeting the guests, the Queen cut a cake with the Platinum Jubilee emblem, prepared especially for the occasion. On her departure, the monarch received a bouquet with flowers that were part of her coronation bouquet in 1953, such as the lily of the valley.
It was the largest gathering the sovereign had attended since October, when she hosted a reception to mark the Global Investment Summit at Windsor Castle.
Days later, concerns about her health were raised after she abruptly canceled a trip to northern Ireland and spent a night in the hospital for what a spokesperson described at the time as “preliminary investigations.”
Since then, she has continued to follow her doctor’s guidance, performing light tasks remotely via video and phone link and a few small personal appointments.
The Queen traditionally marks Ascension Day on February 6 out of the public eye at Sandringham, remembering her father, King George VI, on the anniversary of his death.
A series of celebrations will take place throughout the year, culminating in a highly successful four-day holiday in June, when the nation can participate in Jubilee-themed festivities.
Over the long weekend, headlights will be lit across the UK, Buckingham Palace will host a music concert, street parties are being encouraged and a contest will bring together over 5,000 people, artists, key workers and volunteers from the UK and Commonwealth of Nations.
