Queen Paola of Belgium confessed in a documentary that she also betrayed her husband, King Albert II, and that the couple almost divorced, according to what was published by the newspaper El País.
The statements were made in the documentary Paola, cote gardenshown by RTBF and to which El País had access, where the story of the Italian princess who became Queen of Belgium after marrying, for love, with Albert II, the young man she met in 1958 at the coronation of Pope John XXIII is told .
Aired this Monday (21), the documentary shows Paola Ruffo di Calabria, a 22-year-old girl who married Albert on July 2, 1959 at the Cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula, in Brussels, in what was the first royal wedding after WWII.
Young and passionate, as Paola confesses in the documentary, they were the parents of three children, Felipe, Astrid and Lorenzo, to whom the queen regrets not having given due affection.
The marriage was going well, until the moment when Prince Baldwin married the Spanish aristocrat Fabiola de Mora y Aragon, and the then princes of Liége retreated in the hierarchy to give prominence to the future king.
