Queen Rania of Jordan denounces ‘world’s silence’ on Gaza situation

Queen Rania of Jordan today denounced the “silence of the world” on the situation in Gaza Strip after the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas, declaring she was “shocked” by the “reaction” of Western countries.

“The people of the Middle East (…) are shocked and dismayed by the world’s reaction to the catastrophe unfolding right now. In the last two weeks we have found that there are two standards“, he said in an exclusive interview he gave to the American television network CNN, which was broadcast today.

“When October 7th happened, the world immediately and unreservedly supported Israel and its right to self-defense and condemned the attack” by Hamas on Israeli soil, he noted.

According to Israeli authorities, at least 1,400 people were killed, most of them civilians, on the day of the attack by Hamas, which led to war between Israel and the Islamist group. In retaliation, the Israeli military is bombing the Gaza Strip to “wipe out” Hamas and free the approximately 220 people held hostage there. More than 6,500 Palestinians, including 2,700 children, have been killed by Israeli bombing. In the besieged enclave, hospitals are closing due to fuel shortages and residents, 2.4 million people, are without running water and electricity. Many organizations warn that the humanitarian situation is catastrophic.

“What we have seen for a few weeks now is the silence of the world. It is the first time in modern history that there is such a human tragedy and the world is not even asking for a ceasefire,” said Queen Rania, calling the West “complicit”.

Many Western governments have voiced their support for Israel, calling for international law to be respected as the Israeli military continues its bombardment and prepares for a possible ground operation.

Thousands of people demonstrated across the Arab world, particularly in Amman, the capital of Jordan, to show support for the people of Gaza. Israel and its allies have so far rejected calls for a ceasefire that, according to the White House, would only benefit Hamas.
