Queiroga estimates 30 million doses for children in the first trimester

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, calculates that, by the end of the first quarter, the country will have 30 million doses of vaccine against Covid-19 available for the population aged 5 to 11 years.

The total, according to official data, is higher than the population of this age group, of 20 million, which, in the evaluation of the folder’s servers, will allow the beginning of the application of the second dose before the month of April.

The vaccination schedule, however, is under the responsibility of the federation units.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), for example, announced that vaccination for this age group will start on January 17th.

As the recommendation of the folder is that the interval of doses is eight weeks, the 11-year-old public, the first to be vaccinated, will be able to take the second dose, completing the vaccination, in March.

The Ministry of Health also calculates that it will be able to immunize with the booster dose most of the country’s adult population in the first half of this year.

The expansion of booster immunization for the adult population was listed by Minister Queiroga as one of the priorities for this year in an attempt to avoid hospitalizations for the new Ômicron variant of the coronavirus.

In private conversations, the minister also points out the need to move forward with the application of the second dose, especially in the North Region, which presents a delay in relation to other regions of the country.

The diagnosis made by the folder is that in the coming months the new variant should become the main responsible for the cases of coronavirus in the country, a trend observed in Europe and the United States, and that, therefore, the reinforcement in adults is crucial.
