Queiroga says fourth dose will be recommended when there is scientific evidence

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, told CNN that the federal government will recommend a fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine for the general population “when there is scientific evidence to support it”.

Last week, João Gabbardo, executive coordinator of the Scientific Committee of São Paulo, stated in an interview with CNN that the population of the state over 60 years will receive the fourth dose as of April 4th.

According to the minister, the application of this dose is not the priority at the moment. He has defended the need to complete the vaccination cycle of the adult population. “We will overcome this health crisis with firm actions,” he stressed.

Last Friday (11), the Technical Advisory Chamber on Immunization of Covid-19 (CTAI) decided that it will not recommend the fourth dose of vaccine in Brazil. The information was provided by the CNN.

According to sources from the technical chamber, the understanding is that there is no scientific research with enough data to support a new booster of immunization for people who are not immunosuppressed.

Also according to technicians who make up the technical committee, people who took two doses and the booster are with the complete vaccination schedule, and remain well protected against Covid-19 and the worsening of the disease.

Over the past week, the folder recommended a booster dose against Covid-19 for immunosuppressed adolescents.

The folder advised that the primary vaccination schedule for this group should be done with three doses — the first, second and the additional dose — with an interval of eight weeks between them.

Upon completion of this regimen, a booster dose is recommended four months after the third dose.
