Question to the Commission by Nikos Androulakis about Hagia Sophia

The president of PASOK-Movement for Change asked for initiatives for the protection of Hagia Sophia, a monument of World Cultural Heritage and a symbol of Orthodoxy, after the vandalism at the Imperial Gate, with a question submitted to the European Commission.

The following is the text of Mr. Androulakis’ question:

“Two years after the conversion of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, a UNESCO World Heritage Site from a Museum to a Mosque, the vandalism of the monument’s imposing Imperial Gate dating back to the 6th century AD is unacceptable. the abomination of all mankind.

These catastrophes raise reasonable questions about the protection of this historic monument which has been the center of Orthodox Christians for many years, and the preservation of its special cultural character is an obligation of Turkey.

With all this in mind, can the European Commission:

– How can it force Turkey to honor its international obligations regarding the protection and status of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul?

– What initiatives does it intend to take, possibly in cooperation with Unesco, to strengthen the protection of Hagia Sophia and to repair the damage caused?
