The interpreter Melquisedeque Marins Marques, better known as “Quinho do Salgueiro”, died at the age of 66 this Wednesday (3), in Rio de Janeiro. Quinho was an icon of the Rio carnival, and commanded Salgueiro parades such as the famous samba-enredo “Peguei um ita no Norte”, from 1993, known for the verse “explode heart, in the greatest happiness”.
According to information from Salgueiro, the samba singer died of respiratory failure and had been battling prostate cancer. He was taken to Evandro Freire Hospital, on Ilha do Governador, after feeling ill.
The management of the Evandro Freire Municipal Hospital stated that the patient was admitted to the unit last night (3), already dead.
“Quinho was not just a talented interpreter, he was the voice that echoed in every achievement, in every parade, and that was intimately intertwined with the soul of Salgueiro. He didn't just sing for Salgueiro, he lived and breathed every note, every beat of the drums' racing heart. He personified the spirit of Salgueirense”, said the school in a statement published on social media.
The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), lamented the death and expressed his condolences to the residents of Salgueirenses, friends and family of Quinho. “What a loss for Rio Carnival and our culture,” he wrote.
Information about the wake and burial has not yet been released.
