November is marked by several national holidays. For workers who can get time off on these dates, the month is an excellent opportunity to travel or rest.

This year, in addition to national holidays, anyone from the city of Rio de Janeiro will have even more days to relax. The city hall of the capital of Rio de Janeiro published a decree that declared a municipal holiday on November 18 and 19, 2014 due to the G-20 Summit of Heads of State and Government in the city.

With this, the Marvelous City will have a mega long weekend of six days, between November 15th and 20th.

However, the decree by Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) establishes that there will be no holidays in some sectors, such as street commerce; bars and restaurants; hotels and inns; shopping malls; theaters, cinemas and libraries; tourist attractions, among others.

Difference between holidays and optional points

National holidays are dates set out in federal law and are valid for the entire national territory. For this reason, they are mandatory days off, in accordance with the legislation.

Optional points, on the other hand, are not mandatory and are only valid for public servants.

However, states and municipalities can determine by law which optional points become holidays, as is the case with Corpus Christi and Carnival.

There are also municipal and state holidays, which are determined through laws approved in the Chambers and Legislative Assemblies.
