Quota policy strengthens the fight against racism, says professor

In an interview with CNN Radio, in box no CNN no Plural, professor Nelson Inocêncio da Silva, from the University of Brasília – the first to adhere to the racial quotas policy –, assessed that the law has “relevance, importance and emblematic meaning.”

The quota policy will complete 10 years in 2022 and, according to him, it is necessary to watch over its quality, “in addition to establishing the conditions for it to work, thinking about the process and how it is being implemented”, so that it is successful .

“The quota is a strengthening of the fight against racism”, he defined.

In the professor’s assessment, it “also served to encourage black youth”, who are the most affected in all indicators of violence, unemployment and education maps.

Nelson stated that the law tackles the issue of structural racism: “We know that it exists, this policy serves as a stimulus to try to break this structure and encourage universities that the issue exists, we are talking about the access of the population, when it becomes significant, encourages them to rethink their curricula, which are Eurocentric”.

“The quotas make the access of a more expressive number of black people viable, but they establish necessary provocations for the university”, he added.
