R. Habeck: European unity on Russian sanctions ‘begins to collapse’

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck on Sunday expressed fears that European Union unity was “beginning to crumble” ahead of a summit to discuss the oil embargo against Russia and plans to reduce dependence on Russian energy, according to what Reuters broadcasts.

EU leaders will meet on Monday and Tuesday to discuss a new package of sanctions against Russia, which could also include an oil embargo and a program aimed at speeding up the end of dependence on fossil fuels, including the Russian natural gas.

“After the Russian attack on Ukraine, we saw what could happen when Europe is united. In view of tomorrow’s summit, hopefully it will continue like this. But it has already begun to collapse,” Habeck told a news conference.

On Friday, European countries struggled to reach an agreement on an embargo on Russian maritime oil supplies, but to allow pipeline deliveries, a compromise to win over Hungary and unblock new sanctions against Moscow.

Hubeck called on Germany to speak with one voice at the summit instead of abstaining from voting due to differences of opinion within the country’s governing coalition. He called for similar unity from other EU countries.

“Europe is still a huge economic space with incredible economic power. And when it stands united, it can use that power,” Habeck said at the opening of the German trade fair Hannover Messe.
