The former British Prime Minister, Boris Johnsonand his government’s former finance minister, Rishi Sunakpotential rivals in the race for Number 10 Downing Street, met last Saturday night, according to media reports including the BBC and the Sunday Times.
Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak, whose resignation ultimately led to that of the former prime minister, have yet to formally jump into the Tories’ blitzkrieg for a new party leader, following the resignation of Liz Truss, who he was only 44 days in power.
Mr Johnson returned to London yesterday morning after his Caribbean holiday, a development that intensified the scenario for his eventual candidacy. He met Mr Sunak to discuss the race to succeed Ms Truss, according to media reports including the BBC.
As reported by the usually well-informed Sunday Telegraph, they discussed the possibility of a “joint” candidacy to avoid the possibility of a Tory “civil war”.
Leaving parliament on July 20, Boris Johnson had thrown the phrase “Hasta la vista, baby!”.
The next prime minister will be the fifth since 2016, when the UK voted to leave the EU.
