Radar failure affects flights at Congonhas, Guarulhos and Viracopos airports

Flights at Congonhas, Viracopos and Guarulhos airports were affected by a failure in a radar that controls air traffic in the region this Thursday (19). Airlines confirmed that several flights were delayed or cancelled.

At around 8:45 am, takeoffs and landings at Viracopos International Airport, in Campinas (SP), were suspended due to a problem with the radar located in Congonhas, in the city of São Paulo, according to Concessionária Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos, which manages the local.

At 9:45 am, the operation began to be gradually resumed and the situation was normalized at 10:10 am. Also according to the airport administration, 20 flights were delayed and another 11 were cancelled, three of which were arrivals and eight were departures, until 11:15 am.

Reports made to CNN indicate that one of the planes in Congonhas, already with passengers, was on the runway for more than 50 minutes due to a breakdown. We contacted Congonhas Airport and awaited a response.

Guarulhos International Airport also confirmed a problem with the radar at the São Paulo Terminal Control Area, which affected operations at the location. According to the administration, the system has already been restored.

In Ribeirão Preto, Leite Lopes Airport was not operationally affected, but two flights were delayed and two more were cancelled. The management of the place highlighted that the passengers were “accommodated by land”.

What the airlines say

According to LATAM, at least 12 company flights were affected this morning, with “six canceled and six alternated to Curitiba, Ribeirão Preto, Rio de Janeiro/Galeão and Santos Dumont”.

Azul, in turn, said that at least 41 flights of the company were impacted by the failure in the radar that controls the airspace. There were 30 flights delayed by 15 minutes or more and 11 canceled at the three airports.

Gol had four flights to Congonhas affected more directly, and the company said that other company operations this Thursday “will be impacted throughout the day, generating some delays”. In a note, it was highlighted that all customers are being informed by the airport teams and “receiving due care”.

All airlines reported that they were providing assistance to passengers.

THE CNN contacted Infraero, which directed the Airspace Control Department (Decea) for comments. We still didn’t get a response until the last update of this report.
