In a note released early in the afternoon of this Friday (5), the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) reported that the radioactive material stolen in the east zone of São Paulo “falls into category 4, representing a very low radiological risk to the population and the environment”.
A car belonging to a medical equipment transport company was stolen in the São Mateus neighborhood in the early hours of June 30. Inside the vehicle was the product, a Germanium/Gallium (68Ge/68Ga) source manufactured by the company Eckert & Ziegler.
The National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) reported that the company employee failed to comply with safety regulations, which require vehicles loaded with this type of substance to be parked in monitored locations.
The man had parked his car on the street near his home. The next day, the car was gone. The products that were collected in Rio de Janeiro were to be delivered to Curitiba (PR) and Blumenau (SC).
“Since then, the CNEN technical team has been working to gather information about the stolen source and has already determined that the transport company’s registration is in order with the regulatory body, and that it is authorized to carry out radioactive material transport operations,” the commission’s note concludes.
The São Paulo Public Security Department (SSP-SP) reported that the case is being investigated by the 49th DP in São Mateus. “Efforts are underway to recover the stolen material and vehicle and identify the perpetrator of the crime,” the statement said.
