RAE: Electricity suppliers have complied with the advertisements of the new tariffs

The electricity suppliers have complied – except one – for the advertisements of the new electricity tariffs, as the Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE) states in its announcement.

As RAE notes “in the event that the tariffs to be published on 20.8.2022 and their related entries are against the provisions of the law and the general principles of transparency, comparability, non-misleading and the avoidance of unfair competition, RAE will publicize the relevant cases without any other wording”.

The announcement states the following in detail:

“The Energy Regulatory Authority, following the entry into force of the extraordinary transitional arrangements for the electricity supply market, has announced that it has examined the formation of the new electricity tariffs, the manner of their registration on the suppliers’ websites, as well as the promotional actions in forms , radio and television media, websites, as well as social media.

Relatedly, RAE sought – in order – to harmonize tariffs with the basic direction of the law (see clarity and predictability of energy costs), to promote the principle of transparency, to safeguard the consumer against misleading reports and advertisements and to reduce unfair practices competition.

For these purposes and within the framework of its supervision, RAE addressed separate letters – recommendations to suppliers and issued guidelines. As a result of these actions, part of which was made public, the compliance of the electricity suppliers with the provisions set out in the framework text in relation to the capture of the state subsidy was achieved.

Now, the revised entries of the new electricity tariffs are displayed in a way that reflects the government subsidy through the Energy Transition Fund and is in line with the principles of transparency and comparability.

“On this basis, we believe that consumers are empowered to make – given the difficult situation – the best choices regarding the choice of Supplier and electricity tariff” as noted.

In addition, RAE states that, while also aiming to maintain healthy competition in the retail market, with a new letter, it addresses recommendations to the electricity supplier in order to immediately reform its advertising strategy and to avoid from now on unfair tactics that distort competition.

Finally, it is noted that the Authority will continuously monitor the practices of electricity suppliers. In addition, it is added that: “taking into account the extensive consultation during the first stage of implementation of the new regulations and the issuance of guidelines and recommendations by RAE, it is considered that electricity suppliers now have the necessary expertise to formulate their tariffs and advertising the entries in accordance with the text box. As follows, in the event that the tariffs to be published on 20.8.2022 and their related entries are contrary to the provisions of the law and the general principles of transparency, comparability, non-misleading and avoidance of unfair competition, RAE will publicize the relevant cases without any other wording. Electricity suppliers are therefore called upon to adequately respond to the obligations that they bear from their role, taking into account the criticality of the conditions for all participants and especially consumers” .
