The month of December will have above-average temperatures in much of the country, according to forecasts from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). There is the possibility of some days of intense heat, especially in the North region.
Some specific areas, however, are forecast to have temperatures close to or slightly below average, due to rain during consecutive days, which can lower the temperature. This is the case of Amazonas, Amapá, southwest of Paraná, east of Santa Catarina and south of Rio Grande do Sul.
Rain and impacts on agricultural crops
The rainfall forecast for next month shows greater variation between Brazilian regions. In a large part of the North Region, in the northeast of Mato Grosso, in São Paulo, in the south of Minas Gerais and in the west of Piauí, it should rain close to or above average. In the south of the country, however, precipitation will be below that recorded in recent years, with the exception of areas located in the east of Santa Catarina and north of Paraná.
“The forecast of more regular and well-distributed rains will continue to occur in the production areas of the North region, favoring the sowing and development of crops. In MATOPIBA (a region that covers the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia), the forecast points to lower volumes of rain, but they will be sufficient to maintain soil moisture in most locations”, explains Inmet.
In the Central-West and Southeast regions, the forecast is that December will see an increase in soil moisture, thanks to a more constant precipitation pattern, which benefits the development of first-crop crops. But regions such as the southwest of Mato Grosso, the south of Mato Grosso do Sul, the west of São Paulo and the north of Minas Gerais may face problems due to the irregular distribution of rain.
In the South, rainfall is expected to remain close to historical average values, keeping soil moisture levels at high levels. This will favor both sowing and the development of first-crop crops. However, specific areas such as the south of Rio Grande do Sul and the northwest of Paraná may experience lower volumes of rain than usual, which could result in a decrease in soil moisture.
