“The rain has intensified in Porto Alegre beyond what the models predicted”, informed the general director of the Municipal Department of Water and Sewage, Maurício Loss, in a video sent to the press in the early afternoon of this Thursday (23).
According to him, teams from the city hall of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul are working to expand the operation of pump houses to drain water. Efforts are concentrated mainly in the Menino Deus and Cidade Baixa neighborhoods, which have been severely affected by floods since the beginning of this rainy season.
“Our teams also continue to clean the networks with hydrojet trucks to remove all that material, that silt, that sand that accumulated in the last floods”, added Loss.
In addition, the coordinator of Municipal Civil Defense, Colonel Evaldo Rodrigues said that the areas already previously affected by the Guaíba floods must remain under attention.
He asks residents of the Menino Deus and Cidade Baixa neighborhoods to monitor the risks, especially those who live on low floors, on the ground floor of buildings. “If necessary, seek shelter in a safe place,” he concluded.
Streets flooded again
Even with the decline of Guaíba, some streets in Porto Alegre were flooded again late this Thursday morning (23). Reports made to CNN realize that water has once again invaded Avenida Cristóvão Colombo, in the central region of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. See images here.
