The rain caused problems in Belo Horizonte and other cities in the metropolitan region this Sunday (31), New Year's Eve. Images show that streets were flooded, houses were invaded by water and trees were uprooted by strong winds. In one of the videos, a car was dragged by water in Contagem, in greater BH. The Civil Defense of Contagem said, in a statement, that at least two families lost all their possessions due to flooded houses.

“The Civil Defense of Contagem informs that atmospheric instability led to intense rainfall that reached the Eldorado and Industrial regions, late yesterday afternoon, December 31, 2023. Teresa Cristina Avenue was closed, demobilized at 7:30 pm. In Vila Marimbondo, around 50 to 60 families were affected. On Candeias and Oiticicas streets, the water depth reached 1.5 m high and there was a need to apply water jets to drain the houses.
Food was served to around 300 people. On Rua João Gomes (Beco 25), two affected families suffered total loss of property. It was necessary to apply hydrojet. Civil Defense will distribute hypochlorite and mattresses to families. In Vila Samag, the Civil Defense team is carrying out the survey, but so far, four families have been affected.”

The Civil Defense of Belo Horizonte reported that it was called for five incidents of flooding and three of erosion due to the heavy rain that hit the city in the afternoon and evening of the last day of 2023.
