Rain leaves one person dead and causes landslides in Rio de Janeiro

One person died and four people were injured in the Monjolo neighborhood, in São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday morning (30) due to heavy rains that have hit the area since Friday night (29).

According to the Fire Department, the victims were in a ditch and the four rescued alive had minor injuries.

In the city of Rio, four houses were hit by landslides in Praça Seca, west of the capital. Two of the properties were completely destroyed. According to the state Civil Defense, there are no casualties. Three families are sheltering in the house of relatives, and one in a support point of the prefecture.

The Civil Defense received 85 calls from Friday night to 11 am on Saturday (30). Thirty-eight sirens were activated in 24 communities where residents were at risk. Despite the weaker rain this Saturday morning, some streets still remain flooded as a result of the previous night’s storm.

The Grajaú-Jacarepaguá Highway, one of the main connections between the North and West zones, is closed due to the risk of landslides. The decision to close the road is based on the protocol criteria adopted by the Operations and Resilience Center (COR-Rio), as the Alerta Rio System station at the site recorded 192 mm of rain in 12 hours.

There are no other roads completely closed in the city, however, drivers may have difficulty passing through some points due to fallen trees, small landslides and pockets of water.

More rain forecast

According to Alerta Rio, rain cores act in different parts of the city of Rio, with light to moderate rain forecast in the next hour, mainly on the coast of the West Zone and in the North Zone, near the Baixada. The stage of attention is the third level on a scale of five and means that one or more occurrences have already impacted the municipality, affecting the routine of part of the population.

The weather this Saturday will be unstable due to the passage of a cold front in the ocean, which will keep the entry of moisture in the municipality. According to information from the prefecture, the sky will be cloudy to overcast and the forecast remains for light to moderate isolated rain in the afternoon. Winds should be light to moderate (up to 51.9 km/h) and temperatures should drop from the previous day, with a predicted maximum of 27°C.

The City Hall of Rio de Janeiro advises residents not to travel through the regions most affected by the rain, not to force vehicles to pass through flooded areas, to avoid contact with flood water and to call the Civil Defense number 199 in case identify any danger signs in buildings.

THE CNN contacted the São Gonçalo City Hall communication office and is awaiting further details on the impact of the storm in the municipality.
