Rainbow Germany against discrimination (and Orban)

Put a stadium lit up in the colors of the rainbow one evening. That’s what many hope will happen on Wednesday night in Munich when the Germany will play againstHungary. The mayor of the city wants to ask UEFA and the German Football Association for the possibility of lighting the external facade of the stadium, the Allianz Arena, with the colors of the rainbow, as has already been done in the past.

It is a gesture against discrimination in the month of Pride. However, it is also a gesture that seems to be in open contrast with the laws recently enacted by the Parliament of Budapest.

“The capital of the Bavarian state supports diversity, tolerance and authentic equality in sport and society”, reads the motion approved in the City Council. “On the occasion of the match between Germany and Hungary, the Council wishes to send a visible message of solidarity to the LGBT community in Hungary, which is suffering from the recent legislation passed by the Hungarian government. This law represents a new low point in the deprivation of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, the latest in a series of measures over the years that constitute a systematic restriction of the rule of law and fundamental freedoms in Hungary.

In the country of the president Viktor Orban there have been several initiatives against the LGBT community over the years. The latter limits the sharing with minors of content dealing with homosexuality and transsexuality.

Since the beginning of the European Championship the German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, captain of Germany, uses a rainbow-colored armband. Uefa, despite being asked, did not sanction the player. “It is a sign of the team in favor of pluralism and is valued as a good cause,” tweeted the German federation. “The colors of the rainbow symbolize the fact that we want to live without discriminating against minorities,” said government spokesman Steffen Seibert.
