Rains affect transport system and close trade in Recife

The rains that have been causing deaths and landslides also affect the transport system and commerce in the capital of Pernambuco and the metropolitan region of Recife .

The Centro Metro line was paralyzed and three integrated bus terminals have not been working since early this Saturday morning (28).

At the station Joana Bezerra do Metro one of the main ones in Recife, passengers had to walk on the tracks due to the delay in the lines.

In Jaboatão dos Guararapes, the Coqueiral Station was invaded by water. According to the Brazilian Urban Train Company (CBTU) there is still no forecast for the resumption of operation of the Center line.

The Department of Highways (DER) of the government of Pernambuco recorded flooding and collapse of barriers on highways in the state. The BR 101 and BR 232 had sections closed due to heavy rains, as well as roads in the Mata Norte and Mata Sul regions.

Damage was also recorded in the commerce. Stores in downtown Recife and malls in the metropolitan region could not open their doors this Saturday. One of these commercial developments had the ground floor partially flooded with the rains.

The Fire Department has been recommending that the population try to avoid leaving the house in case of heavier rainfall and seek safe places.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the risk of flooding, landslides of barriers and overflowing rivers and streams will remain high in Recife, in the metropolitan region and in some cities in the Zona da Mata and Agreste region of Pernambuco. That’s because, according to the agency, the volume of rain will remain high.

Until Sunday morning (29), the capital of Pernambuco should receive another 60 millimeters of rain per hour, with a forecast of more than 100 millimeters per day. The same is expected for the Agreste, Zona da Mata and Planalto da Borborema areas.

The Operations Center of the Secretary of Civil Defense of the State (Codecipe) is providing 24-hour service and can be contacted via telephones 199 and (81) 3181-2490.
