Rains cause at least 21 deaths in the state of São Paulo

Heavy rains during the early hours of Sunday (30) caused at least 21 deaths in São Paulo, according to information from the state government.

Deaths were recorded in the following cities:

  • Franco da Rocha: 5
  • Francisco Morato: 4
  • Embu das Artes: 3
  • Várzea Paulista: 5
  • Aruja: 1
  • Ribeirão Preto: 1
  • Jaú: 1
  • Itapevi: 1

“The disturbances caused by bad weather also left around 660 families homeless or displaced,” the Civil Defense of São Paulo said in a statement on Monday (31).

“Among the victims there are a total of eight children. In addition, there are six injured and 11 missing,” the statement added.

In an interview with CNN on Sunday night, the mayor of Franco da Rocha, Nivaldo Santos (PSDB), confirmed eight deaths in the city, information corrected by the city hall around 11 pm to four deaths. On the morning of this Monday (31), the fifth death was confirmed in the same place as the others, on Rua São Carlos.

According to the Fire Department, between 12:00 am and 11:59 pm since Sunday, 136 calls were received for falling trees and inspections, 52 calls for flooding and flooding, 114 calls for landslides, burials or landslides, and 11 victims were rescued and 3 people still missing.

In Franco da Rocha, the city hall confirmed the record of several occurrences due to the rains.

The most serious incident took place on São Carlos Street, in Parque Paulista, where a landslide hit homes. All five confirmed deaths, until the morning of this Monday (31), happened in that location.

There was also a landslide on Rua Paulo Brossard, in Vila Vassouras. Firefighters were called around 8 am. At the scene, five people were rescued alive – including two children, aged three and eight.

On Rua Dália, in the Vila Palmares neighborhood, firefighters rescued an eight-year-old child after a landslide. The victim was taken alive to the Franco da Rocha Emergency Care Unit.

At 9:50 pm, the city made an alert about the Paiva Castro Dam, which reached the safety limit of 78.7% in volume, and I advise that the population in areas at risk of flooding seek shelter in the homes of friends and relatives.

According to information from the Civil Defense, five people died after a landslide in Várzea Paulista, including three children.

The Municipality of Monte Mor, in the interior of São Paulo, declared a situation of public calamity, this Sunday (30), due to heavy rains and suspended the return to school scheduled for next Monday (31).

During the week, the Municipal Executive will inform the new date of return of activities in the municipal education network.

So far, there are no reports of deaths in the city.

According to the expert, rainfall can reach 100 millimeters per day.
